Qualification criteria for the 2027 European
Athletics Indoor Championships in Valencia and the 2027 World Athletics Championships in Beijing

Götzis, September 28, 2026

The recently published qualification criteria for the European Athletics Indoor Championships, to be held in Valencia (ESP) from
March 4–7, 2027, contain one notable detail: European Athletics has opted not to use the World Rankings as a qualification route.
Qualification will instead be based on the Top Lists and entry standards.

For the men’s indoor heptathlon, the standard is 6,250 points, while the women’s pentathlon requires 4,600 points. At the same time,
performances of 8,550 points in the decathlon or 6,600 points in the heptathlon can also be used as qualification standards.

It is also interesting to note that the qualification period for Combined Events athletes follows the World Rankings qualification period
of 18 months, running from August 22, 2025 through February 21, 2027. As a result, a number of athletes have already qualified for the
2027 European Athletics Indoor Championships.
The qualification criteria for the World Athletics Championships in Beijing (CHN), held from September 11–19, 2027, combine an entry standard with World Ranking position. The qualification period began on February 23, 2026 and ends on August 22, 2027.

To achieve the direct entry standard, athletes must score 8,620 points in the decathlon and 6,550 points in the heptathlon. During the recently completed 2026 season, these standards were already achieved by three decathletes – Ehammer, Neugebauer and Skotheim – and
four heptathletes – Kälin, O’Connor, Oosterwegel and Dokter.
Given the relatively high entry standards, the World Rankings can therefore be expected to play an increasingly important role.
The battle for the coveted placing points available at meetings of different levels will continue.

The control and re-evaluation of how the regulations governing the classification of Combined Events competitions are implemented
and followed by World Athletics and European Athletics is also becoming increasingly important.

During the past season, for example, an indoor meeting was classified as a Silver Level meeting. The regulations for Silver Level
meetings require at least 12 participants in each event and two events – one for women and one for men. In reality, however, the meeting
featured only one pentathlon with eight athletes, of whom just five completed the competition.

Other Combined Events competitions comply with the requirements for Gold Level or Silver Level meetings year after year, or even exceed them. This creates a disadvantage for meetings that adhere to the regulations of their respective level. The level assigned to a meeting is primarily
intended as a quality indicator and is therefore extremely important to athletes, particularly when it comes to prize money and placing points.
