World record, meeting records and double victory for Switzerland with two Swiss records:
That was the world-class all-around weekend in Götzis

Visitors once again experienced athletics at the highest level on both competition days. The "all-around festival" in the Mösle Stadium in Götzn ended with a historic double victory for Switzerland: in front of an enthusiastic crowd, Annik Kälin (SUI) and Simon Ehammer (SUI)secured victories in the heptathlon and decathlon respectively - both with new Swiss records.

Ehammer improved his own Swiss decathlon record to 8778 points, which is also a new world best for the year. Kälin improved her own Swiss record, set at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, to 6726 points in the heptathlon - also a new world best for the year.

High-flyer Simon Ehammer already set a first exclamation mark on Saturday. At 8.51 meters, he achieved the best distance ever jumped in a decathlon in his second attempt in the long jump - a world record in a decathlon! Together with other strong performances, the Swiss athlete took the lead from the second discipline, the long jump, and did not relinquish the number one starting position until the end.

From the beginning, however, Ehammer was continuously pursued by world champion Leo Neugebauer (GER), and Olympic champion and eight-time Götzis winner Damian Warner (CAN) was always hot on his heels after a brilliant start to the first day in the 100m. Ehammer then opened the second day with a strong 13.48 seconds over the hurdles and continued to defend his lead, despite the pressure from Neugebauer. As is well known, the 2019 German world champion Niklas Kaul (GER) had a very strong second day - with strong performances on the second day, he worked his way up from 18th place after day 1 to third place in the final rankings and was even able to finish just ahead of Damian Warner on the podium. Niklas Kaul's meeting record in the javelin throw deserves special mention: with 78.21 m, the German threw his javelin further than anyone has ever thrown it in 50 years of the Hypomeeting, meaning that he not only set a new meeting record but also scored 1015 points for the overall standings.

The 20-year-old Tomas Järvinen (CZE) also caused a stir in the decathlon, winning the high jump with 2.09 meters in his first active decathlon and impressively asserting himself in the top field. Due to his strong performances over the two days, the young Czech was also named "Rookie of the Year" in the decathlon. The rookie in the decathlon was presented by Holzbauwelt - thank you very much for your support.

In the heptathlon, a certain field of favorites developed over the course of the first day, but after day 1 everything was still open: World indoor champion Sofie Dokter (NED) stayed in intermediate 1st place after a strong first day, followed by Annik Kälin (SUI) and Taliyah Brooks (USA). The second day continued with the long jump, in which Switzerland's Kälin, one of the best long jumpers in the world, was one of the favorites from the outset. And so it was that Kälin confidently took the lead after an outstanding long jump of 6.96 meters (1159 points) - and was able to defend it until the end. With her long jump at the Hypomeeting, Kälin also qualified for the individual discipline in the long jump at the upcoming European Championships in Birmingham (GBR) - not with the longest jump, which did not count for the individual classification due to a slightly too strong tailwind, but with her jump of 6.81 m in her first attempt.

Over the course of the second day, Emma Oosterwegel (NED) also continued to work her way forward: the good long jumper and gifted javelin thrower was then able to win the final 800m race, finishing the heptathlon in second place with 6705 points and a new personal best. Oosterwegel did not quite manage to catch up with Annik Kälin, but she was still very pleased with her final result. Sofie Dokter (NED) also set a new personal best with 6627 points, leaving her in third place just 99 points behind the winner.HMG51_4

The performance of Sophie Weißenberg (GER) in her comeback heptathlon after a 20-month break from competition due to injury was also impressive. With consistently strong performances over both days of the competition, she made an impressive return to the top of the world rankings. She even finished second in the 200 meters and third in the long jump with 6.40 meters. With a total of 6449 points, she set a new personal best and finished the competition in a strong fourth place.

The Italian Sveva Gerevini gave herself a great birthday present on Sunday evening: she ran the second-fastest time in the final 800m and set a new Italian national record in the heptathlon with a total of 6413 points. The 25-year-old Swede Erika Wärff also impressed the crowd on her first appearance in Götzis: with 6271 points, she finished her heptathlon in the top 10 on her first appearance, as well as setting a new personal best.

The"Rookie of the Year" in the heptathlon was 19-year-old Enni Virjonen from Finland, who shone with very consistent performances over both days and a new personal best of 6189 points at the end. The Rookie heptathlon is presented byRohner Thomas Zeltverleih, and we would like to thank them for their support.

From an Austrian perspective, Chiara Schuler competed in the heptathlon in Götzis. Although her result was not quite as satisfactory as she had hoped, the Vorarlberg local heroine was delighted with her final new personal best in the 800 m in 2:18.15 minutes.

The World Athletics Competition Performance Ranking, which is calculated from the Participation Score and Result Score, also provides a nice summary in figures of the last competition weekend in Götzis.

As part of the Competition Performance Ranking, the eight best results from the heptathlon and decathlon are converted into points according to the Spiriev table, resulting in a result score. This is exactly 9721 points for the 51st Hypomeeting Götzis 2026 - 134 points more than the World Indoor Championships in Toruń (POL). Simon Ehammer's world indoor record in Toruń also earned the World Indoor Championships an additional 120 points for the Competition Score, putting the Hypomeeting Götzis 2026 in second place in the Competition Performance Ranking by just under 6 points.
